Europe Calls, and America Answers

OK, finally; I made it! I was trying to finish writing this essay before the end of October, and here we are, already in the last week of the month. Time sure flies!

I wanted to tell you all about the EUROCALL Review, since they chose my site, Inspiration Lane, as their Recommended Website. (Thank you, EUROCALL!) And, I have indeed started reading more and more of their newsletter. But, to tell you the truth, I just don’t feel ready yet to summarize all I’m learning. Consequently, look for that topic in an upcoming essay.

As for this essay, I’ll simply say: I truly love how the EUROCALL Review included my site. Specifically, I think it’s great how they used a substantial sized “screen dump” or “screen shot” of the site for a visual focus, and then followed it with appropriate text. I believe a visual always helps a reader understand what you're talking about. (So, if you have the space, include a picture!) Here's the screen shot they published of my site:

I was about to use the above to prove to you how useful it is to learn to take a screen shot, if you yourself happen to have a web site. However, here’s what happened: I realized today, for the first time that the screen shot they used is actually not the same screen shot I sent them!

I don’t know if mine was too small or couldn’t be enlarged or what. But, they used a different screen shot, one they took of my site, from a much later date, which was closer to their date of publication.

And, come to think of it, maybe the "date" of the above screen shot is the reason they took a screen shot, and published a different screen shot than what I emailed to them in July. Their newsletter is published in September. Thus, perhaps they wanted to be more current in terms of their screen shot date. (The date is always included on my site, on the upper left corner, and in any screen shot.)

In short, I can’t use this issue of the EUROCALL Review to prove to you how useful it is for a web creator to know how to take a screen shot, since they used a screen shot I myself didn’t take, even though I emailed one to them. But, I like their online visuals very much. So, here, below, is a screen shot I recently took of the EUROCALL Review -- just so you can see I have indeed learned this skill of taking a screen shot.

Because I'm able to do this new skill, I feel ready for the next editor who asks me for a screen shot. Europe called me, and I answered -- but thanks to teaching myself how to make a screen shot, now I'm ready to answer anywhere! (And, another editor may actually have to rely on my emailed screen shots.)

Well, gotta go -- I want to read more of this current, fascinating issue of the EUROCALL Review . . .

Here's what I had posted on Inspiration Lane about this essay:

This month, September 2007, we head to Europe, where the site you're now reading was just selected as the Recommended Website of the EUROCALL Review. As you may know, anytime you see the acronym "CALL" in ESL it means: Computer-Assisted Language Learning ["CALL"]. Briefly, this is a topic that attracts my fellow professionals, as we all truly believe technology can help people learn English.

Together we'll learn more about their European educational newsletter, which reaches ESL educators and researchers located all over the continent. The editor is a university professor in Spain, and the online publication is published twice a year, from the University of Limerick in Ireland.

I really love how they included Inspiration Lane. You'll understand exactly what I mean when you read my newest journal entry, titled:

"Europe Calls, and America Answers"

Enjoy!

Blogs I Like Reading from ESL, ESOL and EFL Teachers Around the World

  • eflgeek.com - a Canadian EFL teacher in Korea. A really wonderful blog format here, one that I wish was available to all teachers everywhere. He, too, allowed me to post a link to my site on his site. Thanks, eflgeek!
  • esol4u.blogspot.com -- by Nancy Meredith, an American teacher at a community college in Texas. This is a blog Nancy actually uses with her class, though sometimes she posts academic info for other teachers, and shares a great link. (I am still hoping to eventually feature a video Nancy was kind enough to email me of a class project!) Thanks, Nancy!
  • e-poche.net -- from Aaron Campbell, EFL teacher in Japan. An interesting site, and his master's thesis is posted. His site gets a lot of hits (many of which then find their way to my site). I think he only posts what he approves - and he allowed me to post a link to my site. So, thank you, Aaron!
  • Neil Whitfield.wordpress.com -- a retired educator in Australia. Provides a wide variety of useful ESL links, and he gave me a nice review, now posted on my site. Thank you, Neil!
  • In addition: There is a woman ESOL tutor who gives advice to people teaching or learning English, and I have to find her blog; it's really full of relevant ESOL tips and info.

A Celebration - Updated November 2008

A Celebration - Updated November 2008

As of March 2008, Inspiration Lane has been online for one year now. I took some time off to celebrate, but decided to return here earlier than I planned, to encourage you, the ESOL. ESL or EFL teacher, to reflect and express yourself as a writer.

Consequently, in the coming months, I hope you, too, will write an essay! Maybe you want to write about teaching English as a Second Language (or teaching English as a Foreign Language) for posting here, with the goal of helping other teachers better reach their students.

You are welcome to email me your queries and submissions, by clicking here.

If you have already contacted me, and hope to see your work posted here soon, just know: I will indeed get back to you.

Thank you for visiting the site, and wishing me a very happy birthday! Someday I hope to be reading your essays! :)
